There are some little tricks in life that makes things go easier. This is one. In fact, once you learn this you just might be a bit annoyed that your teachers didn’t teach you this.

So, what’s the trick? Whether you welcome trigonometry or feel faint at the sight of quadratic equations, there’s now one area of math that everyone can master: calculating percentages.

Calculators help, of course, but it turns out that there’s a forehead-smackingly simple way to calculate percentages in your head, and most people aren’t aware of it.

That’s it.

Most people already understand that 3 x 5 = 5 x 3. But that we have never thought (or been taught) to think of calculating a percentage as a multiplication operation.

For instance, we quickly figure out that 75 percent of 4 is, of course, 3. We can do that, can’t we? It’s immeasurably easier than trying to calculate 4 percent of 75. But simply reversing the numbers is real. It’s one of those little oddities of math that works.

For instance, 18% of 50 feels hard to calculate, but 50% of 18 is simple. In fact, if you are trying to calculate a simple percentage, and the numbers seem awkward, try flipping the numbers and you’ll get the same result. Works great for tipping, too.

Now I know this article wasn’t about Internet security, or making your computing life safer, or even warning of online scams. But this could be one of those life-changing discoveries that will make you feel like a genius.
